Classification - HVAC Technician

Hourly Non-Exempt

Reports to: Building and Grounds Supervisor

Summary/Objective:

This position of HVAC Technician will provide HVAC services to the School District while identifying repairs, replacement needs, installations, and maintaining and upgrading systems and equipment. Performs routine and preventive maintenance on heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Job Description:

* Inspects, repairs and services HVAC systems to minimize downtime and maximize life of equipment.
* Troubleshoots HVAC issues of varying complexity and implements appropriate solutions.
* Advises management team on all HVAC related issues including: recommended courses of action for repair/replacement, product selection and specification, service life projections, system modifications and improvements.
* Performs preventative maintenance on all HVAC equipment.
* Installs control and distribution apparatus, VAV boxes, thermostats, relays and uninvent motors.
* Responds to emergency service calls and takes appropriate action to ensure health and safety of occupants and safe operation of equipment.
* Manages and monitors Building Automation Systems (BAS) or Energy Management Systems (EMS) and makes necessary adjustments (both programming and to physical devices) to ensure occupant comfort and efficient operation.
* Assists with development of scope of work packages for HVAC repairs, replacements, and installations. Works with contractors and engineers to develop optimal solutions.
* Supports management team in coordinating HVAC related projects or the HVAC portion of multi-trade projects, including large scale installation, replacement, or modification projects.
* Oversees, coordinates, and directs field activities of outside contractors during both routine maintenance and project work. Schedules and coordinates repairs by outside contractors.
* Coordinates with building occupants for scheduled and emergency work, clearly communicating (both orally and written) impacts of work to building occupants.
* Repairs and maintains gas, hot water, steam, and oil boilers.
* Repairs and maintains air handlers, heat pumps, ventilators, cooling coils, and radiators along with other mechanical heating and ventilating equipment.
* Maintains accurate records of service and repairs to all equipment.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job Responsibility Requirements: All work is to be conducted in compliance with applicable employer, state, local and federal safety and environmental requirements.

Qualifications:

* Familiarity with contemporary energy management strategies and control technologies
* S-2 (or S-1) Heating, Piping and Cooling Unlimited Journeyperson (or contractor) License, NATE, EPA Section 608 Technician Certification (Universal Level).
* Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible commercial HVAC service, repair and installation. Only years when a D 2/1 or S 2/1 were held are counted as experience.
* Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical systems.
* High School Diploma, GED or Trade School.
* A valid State of CT Driver's License.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays while performing the duties of this job. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required an eight (8) hour work day to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 50 pounds such as equipment, supplies and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and / or move up to 100 lbs. The employee will sometimes climb ladders, push / pull equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
