HVAC Assistant Foreman General Summary/Overview Statement: Under general direction of the HVAC Shop Foreman, incumbent supervises and coordinates sections activities in accordance with all hospital and regulatory agencies rules and regulations. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Provides general assistance to the Foreman in the day-to-day management of the shop. 2. Schedule and assign work by work order, or in response to trouble calls; establish priorities; estimate time and materials and work force needed for each job and advise supervisor accordingly, for planning purposes; receive, check and complete daily reports in order to establish cost to complete each job, and submit data for entry into computer and subsequent charge-back to the department requesting the service; provide cost estimates on major jobs for departmental budgeting purposes; keep running log of work schedule, in progress, and completed. 3. Provide functional guidance as necessary to subordinate personnel; assign work according to priority and ability to perform; monitor progress and performance of work; provide instruction and close supervision on safety rules and regulation. 4. Coordinate work with other trades and crafts relative to project involvement. Work closely with other hospital units to provide coordination of activities and minimize disruption of hospital operations. 5. Maintain inventory at desired levels; reorder stock supplies based on daily consumption and inventory. 6. Maintain cleanliness of shop, including equipment used daily. Make daily inspection of equipment to insure safety and operability of same. 7. May make recommendations to Foreman relative to changes in materials, process, procedure, technique or equipment, as appropriate. 8. Perform daily functions of the Foreman in his/her absence. 9. Participates in all interviews for all positions assigned to the Shop. 10. Works closely with Project Managers from onset through successful completion of all projects. 11. Performs other duties as assigned. 12. Meets with representative of requestor department to assess and prepare estimates for reconstruction, renovation, and/or modernization type projects. 13. Visits all work sites on a regular basis to ensure that all work is progressing on schedule. 14. Participates in establishing training programs relative to their respective field. 15. Ensures compliance with all codes and regulations (i.e. building codes, fire codes, federal and state agency regulations, city agencies, insurance requirements, etc.) 16. Performs special projects and other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibility Assist in supervision of 22 FTEs. Fiscal Responsibilities Ensures that all shop employees complete their time & materials used via iPad for charge-back purposes; Advise the foreman as to cost of repairing or upgrade HVAC systems. Working Conditions 1. Compliance with the Hospital and department rules on uniforms in addition to the Buildings & Grounds policy and procedure manual. 2. The use of safety equipment such as: respirators, safety glasses, safety shoes, etc. on specific job assignments. 3. a) Pass respirator clearance exam, b) along with compliance with Hospital's universal precaution rules. 4. Understand and practice patient confidentiality (HIPPA) 5. Understand and practice infection control through proper dust containment. Understand the use of the environmental containment booths. 6. Some overtime is required. 7. Is subject to call any time for emergencies due to increment weather, special project or plant failure. 8. Must be physically able to walk throughout the campus. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required 1. Must be able to read, write and perform arithmetic calculations at a level generally acquired through a high school education; requires one-year formal HVAC training which may occur following high school. 2. Requires Three years of HVAC/Refrigeration apprenticeship training. 3. Incumbent must be licensed as a journeyman HVAC in the State of Massachusetts. 4. Requires analytical abilities sufficient to schedule and oversee the work of others, and to ensure efficient utilization of supplies and perform detailed cost estimates for work to be performed. 5. Requires ability to communicate via drawings and sketches (i.e. Drafting) in enough detail to efficiently perform the work shown. 6. Must have knowledge of working with Microsoft Office. Excel, Word 7. Works unsupervised and refers to higher management only on matters of exception or clarification of policies and procedures. 8. Failure to perform could result in increased cost of work. 9. Occasionally (less than 15% of the time) must exert effort to lift over seventy pounds.
